This Week's Highlights

Classes are in full swing here in room 20.    Here is a quick look at our week.

We started our small group reading on Monday.  All of our books are about the immigrant experience in the U.S.  Students are still learning about character development by tracking how the main character changes throughout the story.  We ended this week with a C.A.T. (Connect Across Texts) discussion.  Students had a chance to meet with other reading groups to discuss similarities and differences in their readings. 

Unit 1 math tests went home today.    Our newest unit covers estimation and computation.  Students will review addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers and practice multiplying whole numbers and decimals in this new unit. 

In TCI we are starting a new unit on Native Americans and how they adapted to the various environments of North America.  We will investigate how early Americans used the resources around them to find food and shelter.

We ended today down in Mrs. Hall's kindergarten room.  Every student in our class has a  kindergarten buddy.  Throughout the year, our class will help these young learners with literacy and small writing projects the first Friday of every month.

Today marks the end of the nine weeks.  Please look for your child's report card online next Friday.  I am very proud of their accomplishments and the growth they've made. Here are some of the highlights from this past week. Students researched a Native American cultural region and created a poster to share with the class. In reading, we are discussing and reading about the power of our Sun and electricity. We will learn how to make a solar oven later next week.  Ask your child about how to use a compass or protractor.  We have been measuring and constructing angles and polygons with these special math tools.    Our class rocked the unit 3 social studies test.  Check your child's folder for his/her test. Students recently published their personal narratives.  Our narratives are full of great sensory details, flashbacks, and strong conclusions.  Narratives will be sent home at the end of next week. MAP Testing FAQ

You have probably heard a lot about MAP testing these past few weeks from your child.  Fifth graders have spent three weeks taking a series of tests during their computer lab and media time.   This post is dedicated to answering some common questions you may have about MAP.  As always, if you have any further questions please contact me.  Thanks. The difficulty of the test is adjusted to the student’s performance based on how well the student has answered questions.    MAP measures a student’s progress and growth.    It shows how your child has grown from one year to the next in mathematics, reading, language usage, and science skills.
